BOOK REVIEW: Laura Spinney’s Pale Rider re-examines 20th Century’s biggest tragedy Posted on Septem by adavidjohnson It’s become a standard bit of 20th Century trivia that as terrible as the First World War was, the Flu Pandemic coinciding with the armistice killed more than the conflict itself. Spinney’s book on the flu pandemic, Pale Rider: anthropology is a tool to be used to understand why disease control methods are not accepted by communities, and understanding anthropology—and the associated socioeconomic impact of pandemics—is just as much an integral aspect of the control of influenza as is the provision.

Pale Horse, Pale Rider, by Katherine Anne Porter. Random House, Random House, Victorian novelist Elizabeth Gaskell tried to persuade Charlotte Brontë—whose grim experience of the world suggested otherwise—that everybody has it the same in the long run, but in some people’s lives good and evil are blended, rather than coming. Barry’s book was an appetizer to Spinney’s full course. I was not wild about the way “Pale Rider” was organized. It seemed to meander, both geographically and temporally. In a text version of the book, where it’s easy enough to skip back a few pages to check context, that’s not a problem. On Audible - well, that doesn’t work so.

Conspiracy theorists have claimed online the coronavirus represents the Pale Horse and its rider. Charity Mukuba tweeted: “The rider of this pale horse has been released on earth today. : Pale Rider: The Spanish Flu of and How It Changed the World () by Spinney, Laura and a great selection of similar New, Used and Collectible Books /5().
